01 · What it is

A single strand, a tiny bead, and nothing else

Nano beading attaches hair the gentlest way there is: a tiny silicone-lined bead is clamped around a small section of your own hair together with one extension strand. No heat. No glue. No chemicals. The clamp is the only thing holding it.

Every other permanent method adds something to your strand to make it hold — a melted keratin bond, an adhesive tab, a sewn row. Nano beading adds nothing but a cold, reusable metal ring the size of a grain of rice. That single fact is the root of almost everything good about it, and it's why it's the method the Haus built its name on.

One word, two very different products

Nano bead / nano ring is a cold clamp — a metal ring, no heat. A “nano keratin bond” is a heat-melted keratin capsule — a fusion method. They share the word “nano” (meaning “small”) and nothing else. This guide is entirely about the cold-clamp nano ring.

02 · Anatomy of one bond

What a single nano bond is made of

Four parts, no adhesives. Your hair, the bead, the tip, and the extension strand — held together by pressure alone.

The bead

  • Two layers: a metal outer (aluminium or copper) with a silicone lining inside for grip and to cushion your hair.
  • Colour-matched to your root — sold in ~7 shades (black through blonde) so it disappears at the scalp.
  • Reusable hardware’s exception: the bead is the one consumable — a fresh bead each move-up; the hair carries on.

The strand & tip

  • One extension strand (~1 gram) per bond, pre-formed with a nano tip — a fine metal wire or keratin-set tip that slides into the bead.
  • Human Remy hair only — it must survive washing, heat styling and 6–12 months of reuse.
  • Tip construction varies by brand (wire vs keratin-set) — there’s no single industry standard.
Bead size, honestly
Nano is the smallest bead in the family — the point is discretion, not a precise millimetre.

An honest note on numbers: marketing says nano is “~2 mm” and “90% smaller than micro” — but actual professional products often measure ~2.9–3 mm, and “90% smaller” is brand language, not a measured ratio (Philocaly product specs; Cliphair, 2025). What’s true and matters: nano is the smallest, flattest, most hidden bead, which is exactly why it suits fine, low-density hair.
03 · The family & the words

Nano, micro, i-tip: what’s actually what

The bead family all works the same way — a ring clamped on hair — but the names get muddled. Here’s the clean version.

The trap to remember: “nano” describes bead size. A separate product — the heat-melted “nano keratin bond” — borrows the same word but is a fusion method. Always check which one a source means.

04 · The science, told straight

Genuinely gentle — but not “damage-free”

The honest version, because it’s the one that keeps your hair healthy. Nano removes two of the three real ways extensions harm hair. The third — tension — is the one your stylist controls, and the reason technique matters more than marketing.

The one real risk: tension (traction alopecia)

Any hair held to your own adds load to the root. Sustained pull that’s too tight, too heavy, or left too long can cause traction alopecia — and the timeline matters: caught early it’s reversible, regrowing over ~3–6 months once the tension stops. Left for months to years, it can become permanent scarring hair loss. So the whole game is keeping tension low and catching problems early.

⚑ Warning signs — act on these

  • Pain, tenderness, or a headache that eases when you loosen the hair — the clearest sign a bead is too tight.
  • Redness or small pustules at the bead (traction folliculitis).
  • “Tenting” of the scalp at the bond, or hair “casts” sliding on the shaft.
  • Broken hairs or a thinning “fringe” at the hairline.

✓ How the risk is controlled

  • Correct clamp tension — “a firm handshake, not a death grip.”
  • Right section & weight — never too many strands on hair too fine to carry them.
  • On-time move-ups every 6–8 weeks, before regrowth loads the root.
  • Professional fit & removal — no DIY tension or shaft trauma.

Metal sensitivity — the second honest caveat

Nano tips are aluminium; beads are often copper, and copper alloys can contain nickel — the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. The bead touches the scalp only briefly at placement and moves off skin as the bond grows down, and the silicone lining sits on the inside — but the outer metal is exposed. Anyone with a known metal allergy should say so at consultation and use verified nickel-free / aluminium / all-silicone beads, ideally after a patch test 48 hours before fitting.

What the evidence actually says

There is no peer-reviewed study on bead-method safety specifically, and no head-to-head trial of bead vs fusion vs tape. What is well-evidenced is the underlying hazard — traction alopecia and nickel dermatitis are documented in dermatology literature. So nano’s “no heat, no glue, no chemical” advantage is mechanistically sound and real, but “damage-free” is a marketing overstatement. Fitted well, on suitable hair, it is genuinely one of the gentlest methods available — and that “fitted well” is doing real work.

05 · Who it’s for

The right candidate — and who should wait

Nano is built for delicate hair. But the honest answer to “is it right for me?” is sometimes “not today” — and a good consultation says so.

✓ An excellent candidate

  • Fine, thin or low-density hair — the smallest, flattest bond hides best here.
  • Aging hair that’s thinning but otherwise healthy — wants fullness without heat or glue.
  • Anyone who wants zero heat, glue or chemicals on their strand.
  • Healthy scalp and enough native hair to carry light strands.

⚑ Should wait, or get cleared first

  • Active shedding (telogen effluvium) or post-partum shedding — wait it out; it self-resolves.
  • Very fragile / over-processed / relaxed hair — weakened shafts raise tension risk.
  • Alopecia areata or any active/scarring scalp condition — dermatology clearance first.
  • Untreated pattern (androgenetic) thinning — treat and diagnose first; extensions can mask it.
  • Known metal allergy — nickel-free beads + patch test, or reconsider.

06 · The fitting

How a full head is fitted

Strand by strand, row by row — the slowest method to fit, because care can’t be rushed. A full head is ~150–200 strands over roughly 3–4 hours.

First, the consultation

Before any hair is fitted: an assessment of your hair type, density, fragility, oil production and lifestyle (gym, swimming, how you wear it); a colour match by swatch; a plan for how many strands and where; a patch test at least 48 hours ahead; and an honest quote. A ~1-inch “red zone” around the hairline and parting is deliberately left extension-free so nothing ever shows.

Section

Clean, dry, detangled hair is parted into fine horizontal rows from the nape upward — never inside the red zone.

Thread

A small section of your own hair is drawn through the nano bead with a loop threading tool.

Insert the tip

The extension’s nano tip is slid into the bead, aligned with your hair’s natural growth direction.

Clamp

The bead is positioned ~5–10 mm off the scalp and pressed flat with pliers — secure, never painful.

Blend & finish

Working row by row to the crown, then cut and soften with thinning shears so the bonds vanish into your hair.

What separates a good fit

  • Bead 5–10 mm off the scalp — too close pokes and causes headaches.
  • Even, low tension; no overlapping or over-packed beads.
  • The right amount of hair per bead — too little slips, too much bulks.
  • Every bond aligned to natural growth direction.

A trained, certified skill

  • Nano fitting is an accredited, insurable course (e.g. IPHM / ABT) — not a DIY job.
  • DIY risks wrong tension, breakage, hair loss and beads you can’t reach at the back.
  • First 48–72 hours: wait before the first wash, skip tight styles; mild tightness is normal and eases — persistent pain is not, and should be adjusted.
07 · The hair itself

The bond is only as good as the hair in it

Nano lives or dies on hair quality. It must be human, Remy, and — for fine hair — genuinely fine. Here’s how to read it.

Remy vs non-Remy — it’s about the cuticle
Remy keeps the cuticle scales intact and all facing one way. Non-Remy mixes them, then hides the tangle with a coating that washes out.
Remy — cuticle aligned → strands glide · resist tangling · last 6–12 mo+ Non-Remy — scales oppose → acid-stripped, silicone-coated; coating washes out in 1–2 washes, then it tangles and matts. The feel test Intact cuticle feels slightly rough tip→root, smooth root→tip. Slick both ways = stripped / non-Remy.

Single vs double drawn
How full the ends are — and how heavy.

Reading origin & labels

  • Slavic / European hair is naturally fine, the closest match to fine Caucasian hair — the true premium for fine-hair clients.
  • Virgin ≠ Remy. Virgin = never chemically treated; Remy = cuticle aligned. Hair can be Remy and gently coloured.
  • Grade letters (10A, 12A…) are marketing fiction — no standard exists. Judge by feel and a wash test, not the label.
  • Ethics: single-donor, traceable hair is the better signal; there’s no third-party “ethical” certification.

Spec sheet & red flags

  • Lengths: typically 16″–24″ (some to 28″).
  • Weight: ~1 g per strand; ~150–250 g for a full head, ~50–100 g for volume.
  • Colour: solids plus rooted, balayage and colour-melt; beads matched to root shade.
  • Sheds when handled — weak tips.
  • Tangles/matts after a few washes — coating gone (non-Remy).
  • Glassy, too-shiny — heavy silicone that washes off.
  • Too cheap to be true — it usually is.
08 · Living with them

Maintenance, aftercare & removal

Nano is a relationship, not a one-off. The single biggest factor in healthy hair and a long-lasting set is simple: keep the maintenance appointments.

  • Brush 2× a day with a soft loop brush, holding the root.
  • Wash 1–2× a week, vertically — never flipped upside-down.
  • Blow-dry the bead area so bonds never sit damp.
  • Sleep in a loose braid on silk; tie up for workouts & swimming.
  • Use sulfate-free, alcohol-free products + heat protectant.

✕ Don’t

  • No conditioner, oil or heavy silicone at the roots — it makes beads slip.
  • Don’t sleep on wet hair or pile it up to wash — that mats the root.
  • Don’t skip brushing or delay the move-up — the #1 cause of damage.
  • Go easy on chlorine, salt and purple toning shampoo.

Removal is quick and kind: the bead is squeezed open in the opposite direction and slid off — no solvent, no heat, unlike keratin or tape. If the hair’s in good shape it’s cleaned, re-tipped and refitted for another 6–12 months.

09 · Myth vs fact

Setting the record straight

Beads damage your hair.
Fact: fitted correctly and maintained, the bead adds no heat, glue or chemicals. Damage comes from tension and neglect — both controllable.
Nano isn’t for fine hair.
Fact: the opposite — the smallest, flattest bead is the family’s best option for fine, low-density hair.
It’s a permanent, one-time cost.
Fact: it’s a cycle — move-ups every 6–8 weeks — but the hair is reused for 6–12 months, so the running cost is gentle.
A move-up is just a quick push-up.
Fact: it’s a full removal, reposition and refit of every strand — which is exactly why it protects your hair.
Higher “grade” (10A/12A) = better hair.
Fact: grades are unregulated marketing. Judge by cuticle, feel and a wash test.
Extensions should hurt at first.
Fact: mild tightness can settle in 48 hours; real pain or a headache means a bead is too tight and must be adjusted.
